The pop up window may be a warning asking you to download and install an anti-virus program. If you recognize that this message is not from your own anti-virus software, it may be an attempt to download malicious software onto your PC.Often this type of pop up window will download and install malicious programs onto your computer, no matter where you click on the window. It will even install if you click “Ignore” or the red “x”.

Microsoft is pleased to announce the release of Service Pack 2 for Exchange 2007. Upgrade to the latest version for security, stability and ease of use.

In order to deploy Exchange Server 2010 into an existing Exchange 2007 organization, the Exchange 2007 server(s) must be updated to SP2. Microsoft Exchange 2010 Release Candidate has been released, which is the last stage before the final version is released.

In addition to important security updates, Exchange 2007 Service Pack 2 includes new features such as:

Enhanced Auditing
New Exchange auditing events and audit log repository enable Exchange administrators to more easily audit the activities occurring on their Exchange servers. It allows the right balance of granularity, performance, and easy access to audited events via a dedicated audit log repository.

Dynamic Active Directory Schema Validation
The dynamic AD schema update and validation feature allows for future schema updates to be dynamic deployed as well as proactively preventing conflicts whenever a new property is added to the AD schema.

Public Folder Quota Management
Exchange 2007 Service Pack 2 provides a more efficient way to manage Public Folder quotas by improving the current cmdlets and removing the dependency on the Public Folder Distributed Authoring and Versioning Administration to perform management tasks.

Centralized Organizational Settings
There are several new cmdlet parameters that have been added that enable centralized management of many of the Exchange organization settings.

Worried about the Conficker worm striking on April 1st? A few simple steps can protect you.

Target: All users of Windows XP and Windows Vista.

The Conficker worm is a computer worm that can infect your computer and spread itself to other computers across a network automatically, without human interaction.

What does the Conficker worm do?

Today the worm has created an infrastructure that the creators of the worm can use to remotely install software on infected machines. Most likely the worm will be used to create a botnet that will be rented out to criminals who want to send SPAM, steal IDs and direct users to online scams and phishing sites.

The Conficker worm mostly spreads across networks. If it finds a vulnerable computer, it turns off the automatic backup service, deletes previous restore points, disables many security services, blocks access to a number of security web sites and opens infected machines to receive additional programs from the malware’s creator. The worm then tries to spread itself to other computers on the same network.

How does the worm infect a computer?

The Conficker worm tries to take advantage of a problem with Windows (a vulnerability) called MS08-067 to quietly install itself. If you automatically receive updates from Microsoft you may already be protected from this. The worm also tries to spread by copying itself into shared folders on networks and by infecting USB devices such as memory sticks.

Who is at risk?

Users whose computers are not configured to receive patches and updates from Microsoft and who are not running an up to date antivirus product are most at risk.

Advice to Stay Safe from the Conficker Worm:

Run a good security suite (we suggest Symtec EndPoint Protection).

Keep your computer updated with the latest patches. If you don’t know how to do this, contact us for further help.

Don’t use “free” security scans that pop up on many web sites. All too often these are fake, using scare tactics to try to get you to purchase their “full” service. In many cases these are actually infecting you while they run. There is reason to believe that the creators of the Conficker worm are associated with some of these fake security products.

Turn off the “autorun” feature that will automatically run programs found on memory sticks and other USB devices.

Be smart with your passwords. This includes

Change your passwords periodically

Use complex passwords – no simple names or words, use special characters and numbers

Using a separate, longer password for each site that has sensitive personal information or access to your bank accounts or credit cards

FAQ’s

Q: Am I safe if I don’t go to questionable web sites?

A: No. The Conficker worm seeks out computers on the same network. You can be in a coffee shop, an airport or in the office and the worm will quietly try to attach to your computer and run itself.

Q: How do I know if I am infected?

A: The best way to know if you are infected is to run a good antivirus product. One symptom that may indicate you are infected is finding that your computer is blocked from accessing the web sites of most security companies.

Protect Your Network Against the Latest Vulnerabilities

As Adobe announces the latest security bulletin on vulnerabilities, Kyle Peterson of Bennett Office Technologies emphasizes the importance of keeping your network and workstations up to date with software updates on a regular basis. Keeping your anti-virus software up to date and implementing a hardware firewall will help protect your network against security vulnerabilities. “It only takes one computer to be vulnerable and give unauthorized access to the entire network. A company’s network is only as strong as it’s weakest link” warns Network Technician Kyle Peterson.

Bennett Office Technologies recommends Managed Services as a solution to help detect vulnerabilities and security threats before they enter your network. Bennett Office Technologies will proactively manage your network, ensuring your computers, software and network hardware are fully operational and at optimum performance levels.

Managed Services goes beyond your typical network support. It is a software that provides 24×7 network monitoring. It will do wonderful things like detect and alert Bennett Office Technologies if your server hard drive is about to fail, running low on memory, or if unauthorized users are trying to access your network.

A potential vulnerability has been identified in Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits this potential vulnerability to take control of the affected system. A malicious SWF must be loaded in Flash Player by the user for an attacker to exploit this potential vulnerability. Additional vulnerabilities have been addressed in this update. Adobe recommends users update to the most current version of Flash Player available for their platform.

Adobe recommends all users of Adobe Flash Player 10.0.12.36 and earlier versions upgrade to the newest version 10.0.22.87 by downloading it from the Player Download Center, or by using the auto-update mechanism within the product when prompted.
