Simple key combinations can make a workday go faster. Here are some favorites staff can appreciate in their day to day PC activities:

Alt + Tab Switch between active applications
Alt + F4 Close the app you’re in
Alt + F8 Use this to see the password you’re typing in at the sign-in screen
Alt + Spacebar Open the shortcut menu for the active window
Ctrl + Shift + Esc Open the Task Manager
Ctrl + Y and Ctrl + Z Redo or undo an action

Windows Logo + L Lock your PC

Windows 10 Productivity Tips to Make Your Work Day EasierIf you’re familiar with Command Prompt you can use Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V at the command line prompt. To do this, you may have to activate by going to Properties in the title bar of the Command Prompt.

Virtual Desktop and Windows 10

A virtual desktop lets you create a “new” desktop or multiple desktops that you can scroll through. To organize your workspace by projects, try the virtual desktop. You can compare it to using Alt + Tab to switch between applications, but you are actually switching between desktops.

Cortana and Windows 10 

Cortana is Microsoft’s Digital Voice Assistant and was introduced to the Windows OS in 2014. Use Cortana to open files on your computer or mobile device, manage your calendar, set reminders and search general information. A simple “Hi Cortana” will get you started.

User Access and Security

To manage User Access and manage notifications Go to Start → Control Panel → Security and Maintenance → Change User Account Control settings. On the Choose when to be notified about changes to your computer page, move the slider to one of the top two notches closest to Always notify.

Schedule Restarts for Windows Updates

One of the challenging elements of Windows Updates are the prompts to restart your PC to apply a Windows update. Windows 10 offers the option to set specific times when your PC cannot be restarted. You can access this option by going to Settings → Updates and Recovery → Windows Update.

God Mode in Windows 10

Windows 10 includes a God Mode feature that allows you access to all of Microsoft’s administrator features, settings, and Control Panel options, in one centralized location.

Note, if you are not an IT professional we strongly recommend contacting a technician if you have not used this mode before. Only experienced technical users should consider using these features.

These steps are recommended for technical users managing Windows devices, PCs and laptops:

  1. With your administrator account, create a New folder on your desktop. Rename it using the syntax below: GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
  2. To give the folder a different name replace “GodMode”, but that is the only syntax you can modify.
